Digication and Blackboard

Digicaton is the recommended and supported ePortfolio application for the UB Curriculum. Blackboard/UBlearns is the recommended and supported Learning Management System (LMS).

Digication is capable of serving as a rudimentary LMS (similar to the Blackboard/UBlearns system); however, it does not have nearly as robust of a feature set. Gradebook, discussion forums and email functionality are much more in-depth and feature rich in the UBlearns LMS.

It is recommended to use Digication together with Blackboard/UBlearns to take advantage of the strengths of each.

What should I use to manage my course, Digication or UBlearns?

It is up to each faculty member to select the platform that is most suited to their needs. No matter which tool(s) you decide to use, make sure you make your decision clear to students.

What does Digication do best?

Digication courses are a way to streamline and manage student ePortfolios, putting them all together in one place. There are several benefits to creating a Digication course for students’ portfolios:

  • You don't have to search for the portfolios in the general system; they're all collected in one easy-to-reach place.
  • If you want your students to see each other's portfolios, you can make it easy for them to find each other as well.
  • The course allows streamlined control over privacy access making it possible for students in the class (or other team-teaching faculty) to view each other's portfolios while hiding them from others outside the course.
  • You can create a template portfolio so that all your students' portfolios follow a common structure, giving you ease of reference to them.
  • You can have students formally submit their portfolios as course assignments, which prevents students from modifying them after the fact and gives you a quick grid showing who has submitted and who hasn't.

In the future, access to Digication will be available directly through Blackboard/UBlearns.
